Size does matter
You may have wondered why your grandmother's glass collection is so extensive. You only see her using the biggest glasses.
Once it was prestigious to have many different types of glass, and originally a glass collection included up to 18 glasses per person.
Today, a glass set usually consists of eight types of glass. Although few possess such a large herd, most can still agree that it feels wrong to drink schnapps from a red wine glass.
Here you will get a small guide to the glasses that are most often found in Danish homes - and to the alcohol for which the glasses are intended.
Schnapps is a strong alcohol. That is why you drink it in small quantities. Before 1917, the tax was small, which is why antique shot glasses are usually large. Small antique shot glasses are hard to come by.
We drink water primarily for practical reasons. Water glasses are available in several sizes, but usually they are relatively large in size.
Port wine is a sweet mulled wine that is often drunk with dessert. The wine contains up to 20% alcohol.
Its glass is therefore larger than the schnapps glass.
Liqueur has a rich aroma, which is best served in glasses with a large diameter. That's why we drink liqueur from a bowl.
White wine glasses are smaller than red wine glasses, as the wine is served with the light dishes of the meal. The glass is often green to hide a possible sediment in the wine.
Red wine is served with the main course. The flavor is expanded by oxygenation, which is why red wine glasses have a larger diameter.
Beer glasses are either stemless in the same shape as a water glass or have the shape of a tall red wine glass. Beer has a low alcohol percentage. That's why we like to drink larger amounts of it.
Champagne is suitable for celebrations and is drunk either from a glass or from a flute. Some believe that toasts belong before 18 and whistles after 18
In general, high percentages are served in small glasses. If you have comments on this post, you are always welcome to come by for a chat at the store in Store Kongensgade.
