Large miniature portrait of Frederik d. 4 of Holsten-Gottorp
Height 9 cm. Width 7.5 cm.
Early miniature portrait of Frederick IV of Holstein-Gottorp. He lived from 1671 to 1702. He was directly related to the Danish regent through his mother, Frederikke Amalie of Denmark, who was the daughter of Frederick III of Denmark and Norway. Frederick IV of Holstein-Gottorp chose a more protectionist approach to the duchy and chose an alliance with Charles XII of Sweden, who was his cousin and brother-in-law, when Denmark occupied the duchy in 1700. Sweden's surprise attack on Zealand forced Denmark to quickly surrender and accept the sovereignty of the duchy. The picture is in very fine condition and set in a patinated brass frame. It is signed "Bürger" on the edge.
