Frame of micromosaic from the 1890s
Height 6.5 cm. Width 5 cm. The use of mosaic can be dated as far back as 2500 years before our era. It was used to decorate walls during the Mesopotanian Empire. Later this use became widespread, and today it is often seen in churches and Greek and Roman temples. This special micro-mosaic found its distribution in Italy at the beginning of the 1800s and gained its full distribution after the excavation of Pompeii, during which extremely well-preserved mosaic floors and walls were found. Each individual glass rod is cut out by hand and laid down in the metal frame of the picture frame.
