Christian d. 8 was produced at the major Danish glassworks, Holmegaard, Kastrup and Fyens Glasværk from the mid-1800s until the 1940s, when it was discontinued. It is also produced in a smooth version, called Berlinois. This glass has also been produced at Holmegaard, Kastrup and Fyens Glasværk. Christian d. 8 is one of the most extensive Danish glass series - it is produced in 18 different sizes, from large porter glasses to rare schnapps flutes. Today, it is impossible to distinguish the glass from the glassworks from each other. It is named after the last absolute Danish king, Christian d. 8, who reigned from 1839 to 1848, when Denmark transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a democracy.
