Italian platter with "The Flour Seller"
Diameter 20 cm.
Italian plate from the mid-19th century, decorated with gold and motifs in overglaze.
The plate is decorated with a flour seller in the market square surrounded by other traders. The motif can be seen from an etching made by Nicola Vianelli in the years 1836-1843. Several museums have this etching in their collections, including the British Museum.
The banner is decorated with gold, with polished flower petals. The quality of the painting is extremely high - it is rare that we have seen this quality. It is signed on the back "Banditore de Farina" as well as a few impressed numbers.
The plate comes from a private Danish collection of 18th and 19th century porcelain.
There is some wear on the gold.
