Ludvig Holberg figurines from Bing & Grøndahl
Height 18-20 cm.
There is natural wear on the gold decoration of the figures. Magdalone has a chip on her fan. Jeronimus is missing his walking stick. Henrik and Jeronimus are both a little rough on the ends of their jackets.
The figures come from Holberg's comedy Maskerade, drawn by Hans Tegner in the 1920s and decorated in a faint background colour and gold decoration. The action takes place in the spring in Copenhagen around 1720. Every evening the young people go to a masquerade. When you wear a mask, you can fall in love with anyone. Leander goes to the masquerade with his servant, Henrik. He has fallen in love with a strange young girl, even though his father, Jeronimus, has decided that he must marry a daughter of his father's good friend Leonard. This girl is called Leonore. Jeronimus thinks that masquerades are a bit of modern nonsense. He forbids Leander to go there again and puts the farmhand to guard the door. Nevertheless, Leander and Henrik manage to get away. Now Jeronimus must also dress up and go to the masquerade to pick up his disobedient son. When the masks finally fall off, it turns out that the unknown girl is precisely the Leonore that Leander is to marry.
