L. Hjorth's factory on Bornholm was founded in 1859 and still exists, run by the same family. The production of the jars began in 1928 and quickly developed into a specialty for the factory. The range was expanded from 4 sizes to include much more than just jars, but also teapots and small bowls. In 1960, sales to pharmacies ceased and the series now became popular in the private sector due to the design, which in 1933 was referred to as "Excellent repeaters" in "Nyt Tidskrift for Kunstindustri" by Viggo Steen Møller.
Today, only the 1-liter jar is in production.
